If you're driving through Pearl City this summer, make sure you're keeping it safe and sober behind the wheel. The Honolulu Police Department has announced it will be setting up DUI checkpoints across Oʻahu — and yes, that includes our neighborhoods right here in Pearl City.
These checkpoints will pop up at unannounced times and locations from June 30 through August 31, as part of an ongoing effort to crack down on impaired driving during the busy summer months. So, don’t be surprised if you see flashing lights and orange cones on your evening commute or weekend outing.
HPD is urging all drivers to plan ahead if they’re going to be drinking. That means using a designated driver, calling a ride service, or just staying put. It’s a simple move that could save lives — including your own. Also, just a reminder: the legal drinking age in Hawaii is 21. Giving alcohol to someone underage isn’t just a bad idea — it’s a crime that could land you in jail for up to a year.
This summer campaign is part of the “52/12” program, a national initiative that requires local law enforcement to run sobriety checkpoints every week for a full year. HPD has been on board with the program since September 2024, and they'll be continuing these weekly checks all the way through September 2025.
So whether you’re heading down Kamehameha Highway or cruising through Waimano Home Road, remember: the checkpoints are out there, and they’re there for a reason. Let’s keep Pearl City’s roads safe for everyone this summer.
Quick Tips for Pearl City Drivers:
Don’t drink and drive. Ever.
Use a ride service if you’ve been drinking.
Don’t provide alcohol to anyone under 21 — it’s a misdemeanor offense.
Expect weekly checkpoints through at least September 2025.
