Fireworks Debate Heats Up as Bill 22 Clears Second Reading
A bill aimed at loosening fireworks restrictions on Oahu is moving forward to the Honolulu City Council. Bill 22 proposes allowing the sale of novelty fireworks without a permit, though firecrackers and aerial displays would still face restrictions. Supporters argue the current ban is ineffective and see potential benefits for local businesses. All other counties in Hawaii already permit similar sales. If passed, permits would still be required for firecrackers during major holidays and cultural events.
State Awards $235K Grant to Support RYSE’s Homeless Youth Shelter
The state has awarded a $235,000 grant to RYSE, a nonprofit offering emergency shelter and services to homeless youth in Hawaii. The funding will help the organization provide comprehensive support, including medical, behavioral, educational, and employment resources, to assist young people in overcoming the challenges of homelessness and high living costs in the state.
Elefante Vows to Address Crime, Affordable Housing, and Cost of Living in Re-Election Campaign
Brandon Elefante, Democratic candidate for State Senate District 16 (Pearl City, Momilani, Pearlridge, 'Aiea, Royal Summit, 'Aiea Heights, Newtown, Waimalu, Halawa, Pearl Harbor), focuses on public safety, housing affordability, and economic relief for working families. He supports income tax cuts, government transparency, and diversifying Hawaii’s economy. His plans include incentivizing local job creation, improving housing access, and enhancing public engagement in the legislative process. Elefante also backs reforms to combat corruption and promote public financing for elections.
