Aloha Stadium Redevelopment Moves Forward, Projected for 2028 Finish
The new Aloha Stadium in Halawa is expected to be completed in time for the 2028 football season, despite a minor delay. The state committee is working closely with Aloha Halawa District Partners (AHDP), the sole bidder, to finalize the $450 million project. Once the proposal is approved, a nine-month negotiation period will precede the demolition of the old stadium, with groundbreaking slated for 2025. The AHDP consortium will design, build, operate, and maintain the stadium, which will seat at least 25,000 people. The project also includes significant real estate development around the stadium.
Rising Cases of Parvovirus and Panleukopenia Spark Community Call to Help Pets
The Hawaiian Humane Society is facing a rise in parvovirus and panleukopenia cases among puppies and kittens and is calling for community action. They urge pet owners to avoid surrenders unless necessary and promote fostering or adoption, waiving fees until September 30. The society stresses the importance of vaccinations and spaying/neutering, while offering incentives for foster families. Enhanced disease prevention measures are in place at their shelters.
City Council Committee Passes Proposal to Tax Empty Homes on Oahu
Honolulu’s City Council advanced Bill 46, a proposal to impose taxes on vacant homes in a bid to address the island’s housing affordability issues. The tax would start at 1% of a home’s value and increase to 3% over time. Supporters believe it will incentivize property owners to rent or sell unused homes, potentially raising $180 million annually. The funds would primarily support affordable housing and homelessness initiatives. The bill still faces questions around enforcement and awaits further review by the City Council's budget committee.
