Mobile Homeless Shelters In Neal Blaisdell Park Relocates to Kapolei’s “Musubi Lot”
The City and County of Honolulu’s Homeless Outreach and Navigation for Unsheltered Persons (HONU) program is relocating its mobile shelters from Neal S. Blaisdell Park in Aiea to a new site in Kapolei. As of October 1, 2024, the program will operate out of a vacant lot across from Kapolei Hale, situated between Kamaʻaha Avenue and Alohikea Street along Kapolei Parkway. Locals have dubbed this triangular-shaped space the "Musubi Lot," due to its unique geometry.
The decision to move follows increasing concerns over homeless encampments in the area. Sam Moku, the city's Homeless Coordinator, shared that the new location had been under consideration for some time, but finding a suitable space in Kapolei had proven difficult due to the region’s busy nature, particularly around Kapolei Regional Park. The selection of the Musubi Lot was made possible through collaboration between several city departments.
The HONU program’s relocation is part of a broader effort to enhance outreach, particularly in high-complaint areas such as Kapolei Regional Park, Kapolei Parkway, and Kalaeloa. Local businesses and service providers are set to play a key role in this increased outreach initiative. At a recent meeting of the Makakilo, Kapolei, and Honokai Hale Neighborhood Board, the relocation plan received unanimous approval.
HONU’s mobile shelters have a proven track record of engaging with unsheltered individuals, connecting them to essential services. The city believes this move will allow them to continue positively impacting the community.
