Community-Wide Action Needed to Combat Domestic Violence
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, highlighting the urgent need to address domestic violence in Hawaii. A 2024 report shows 18% of Hawaii adults have faced physical or emotional abuse from intimate partners. Financial hardships worsened by the pandemic have trapped many survivors in abusive situations. Child & Family Service (CFS) offers programs like Transition to Success and Ka La Hiki Ola, providing holistic support for families and addressing social determinants of health. Programs like House of Hope: Pet Place even protect pets affected by domestic violence. However, funding for these services has stagnated for 15 years, leaving gaps in support, particularly on neighbor islands. A community-wide approach and increased funding are necessary to break the cycle of abuse and build a safer future.
