Lost Hiker Rescued by HFD Helicopter on Aiea Loop Trail

The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) deployed its Air 1 helicopter yesterday afternoon to rescue a hiker who got lost on the Aiea Loop Trail. The woman, in her 30s, had been hiking for about four hours before she realized she couldn't find her way back down. HFD received a 911 call at 3:27 p.m., prompting the dispatch of seven units, staffed with 19 personnel. The first responders arrived by 3:48 p.m., establishing a landing zone for air operations.

Using GPS from the hiker’s cell phone, crews located her near a ridge above the trail. However, heavy clouds in the area forced Air 1 to drop rescue personnel about a mile from her location. After navigating the terrain, the rescuers reached the hiker at 5:17 p.m. and led her to a safe point where the helicopter could airlift her to safety. By 6:39 p.m., the hiker was successfully transported to the designated landing area.

Oahu Residents See Amazon Delivery Changes: What You Need to Know

Amazon customers in Oahu have been experiencing changes in their delivery services, with some reporting delays since the opening of the new Amazon distribution center a couple of months ago. These issues are especially affecting residents in apartment buildings, so if you're planning to take advantage of the upcoming sale or start holiday shopping early, it's crucial to provide clear delivery instructions.

While Amazon delivery vans are becoming a common sight in Honolulu, their coverage is limited to certain areas. Residents in North Shore and Leeward Oahu still receive their packages via USPS and third-party services. Town residents, however, have noticed delays or changes in delivery locations.

One contributing factor is that Amazon has partnered with local companies for deliveries, and these drivers are still adapting to their routes and the specific challenges of the island. Unlike traditional USPS or FedEx drivers, Amazon’s drivers do not have access to postal service mailboxes, meaning packages need to be delivered to alternative locations within buildings.

Experts suggest being precise about delivery instructions, as many buildings lack doormen or secure package boxes. This change requires customers to specify exact locations for drop-offs to ensure a smoother delivery process. Amazon also recommends tracking packages closely through their app to avoid potential issues.

It’s also important to note that the facility on Oahu is not a fulfillment center, where products are picked, packed, and shipped directly to customers. Instead, it serves as a distribution hub, where pre-packed boxes are sorted and sent out to different locations. Delays are not exclusive to Amazon, as the high demand for delivery services across the island is contributing to longer wait times for packages overall.

Amazon is continuing to work on expanding its delivery network across Oahu to improve service.
