Pearl City Neighborhood Board to Host Special Meeting on Sunset Memorial Cemetery Revitalization

Waiau District Park

A special meeting is scheduled for Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 3:00 PM at Waiau District Park in Pearl City, located at 98-1650 Kaahumanu Street. This in-person-only gathering, organized by Pearl City Neighborhood Board, will serve as an informational session for families and individuals with loved ones interred at Sunset Memorial Cemetery.

The meeting's primary purpose is to update attendees on the ongoing efforts to revitalize the cemetery and provide a platform for state and city officials, alongside the nonprofit Friends for Sunset Memorial Cemetery, to discuss future plans. Representatives from both the government and nonprofit will present key updates, including the Governor’s recent signing of HB 2192 and proposed strategies for long-term maintenance.

Attendees will hear about ongoing volunteer work at the cemetery, the challenges posed by vandalism and homeless encampments, and the urgent need for funding to secure and restore the site. Additional discussions will cover infrastructure reintegration, such as water and electricity, and a potential solar PV project by Holu Hou Energy to support sustainable upkeep.

Public feedback will be encouraged during the meeting, with community members invited to express their concerns. The meeting will conclude with remarks from officials and nonprofit representatives.

Bottles4College is set to host a large-scale recycling drive on Friday, October 11, 2024, at Pearlridge Center, specifically at the old Sears Auto Center parking lot along Kamehameha Highway. Running from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., the event aims to collect and recycle at least 40,000 cans and bottles. The funds raised from each recyclable item will go toward scholarships for local students.

Organizers are encouraging volunteers, particularly students seeking to earn volunteer hours while supporting this community-driven initiative. This recycling effort is part of a broader mission led by Bottles4College founder, 16-year-old Genshu Price from Hauula, who has been named a Youth Finalist for the Cox Preserves Young Heroes Award. This recognition highlights Price’s dedication to both environmental sustainability and educational opportunities for Hawaii’s youth.

The public is encouraged to vote for their favorite finalist between October 7 and 13, 2024, with the winning candidate receiving $30,000 in funding for their nonprofit. Winning this award could greatly bolster Bottles4College's impact within the local community, and organizers urge everyone to support the initiative by casting their vote through the Cox Enterprises website.
