Unity Day: Promoting Kindness Through Aloha and Lokahi

Unity Day, observed as part of National Bullying Prevention Month, is an annual event dedicated to promoting kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Across the Hawaiian Islands, schools and communities actively participate in this movement to take a stand against bullying and create a nurturing environment for students. A hallmark of the day is wearing orange, a symbol of commitment to these principles.

In Hawaii, Unity Day carries a distinct local significance by incorporating traditional Hawaiian values like "aloha" (love and compassion) and "lokahi" (harmony and unity). These cultural principles are often highlighted by schools, community groups, and local leaders during anti-bullying campaigns. Schools may host events such as rallies, educational programs, and workshops to encourage students to celebrate diversity and practice kindness in their everyday interactions.

Hawaii’s sense of community, shaped by its multicultural population and the spirit of "ohana" (family), adds a unique layer to Unity Day. The emphasis on looking out for one another and embracing differences aligns perfectly with the goals of this nationwide initiative, making Unity Day especially meaningful in the islands.

Keiki Kingdom to Open Play Area at Pearlridge Center, Replacing Bed Bath & Beyond

Keiki Kingdom, a new children's play area, is set to open on October 19 at Pearlridge Center in the space once occupied by Bed Bath & Beyond. Following the retailer's bankruptcy in 2023, the 65,653-square-foot area will be transformed into a vibrant play space offering a wide range of attractions for kids. Features will include carousel rides, ball pits, trampolines, slides, and dedicated toddler areas. For older children and adults, there will be a two-level area with obstacle courses and trampoline courts.

Keiki Kingdom's expansion to Pearlridge Center reflects its goal of providing innovative play experiences to more families across Oahu. The new location joins its current site on Beretania Street in Honolulu. The facility has already hired 18 employees and is seeking more staff.

The admission starts at $22 per child for two hours, with monthly memberships also available. The play area is designed for children aged 10 months to 13 years.

The Haunted Plantation Returns: Waipahu’s Scariest Attraction Kicks Off 2024 Halloween

The Haunted Plantation, located at Hawaii Plantation Village in Waipahu, has returned for the 2024 Halloween season, offering one of the most terrifying attractions on the island. Set in the historic buildings of a former sugar plantation, the event combines an authentic eerie atmosphere with elaborate scare tactics for an immersive experience. Running on select weekends in October (11-13, 18-20, 25-27) and on Halloween night, the event features over 60 live actors in professional makeup, bringing the plantation’s paranormal history to life with spine-chilling encounters.

Known for its intense themes and terrifying walk-through haunted houses, the Haunted Plantation is not for the faint of heart. The experience plays into the real ghost stories associated with the site, with many visitors reporting paranormal activity over the years. As such, the attraction is recommended for ages 12 and up due to its extreme nature.

Tickets are priced at $21, and while the attraction is cash-only on location, reservations must be made in advance through their website. Gates open at 6:00 PM, and the haunting begins at 7:00 PM, running until 11:00 PM. The event is expected to sell out quickly, so booking early is essential to secure your preferred date and time slot.
