Pearl City’s Iconic Manapua Van Makes Final Stop After Nearly 50 Years

Pearl City is bidding farewell to a beloved tradition as the iconic white Manapua Van will make its final stop on Thursday, October 24. For nearly 50 years, this local food truck has been a cherished part of the community, serving up affordable favorites like manapua, fried noodles, and pork hash. It has attracted generations of loyal customers who remember it fondly for both its comforting meals and its role in local culture.

The van has been run by Joe Vu, affectionately known as Pearl City's "Manapua Man." Vu, who immigrated to the U.S. in 1975, has spent decades feeding the community with his signature dishes, earning the love and respect of many locals. After nearly half a century of service, Vu will retire after his final day of operation on October 24, marking the end of an era for the neighborhood.

This closure brings to a close a long-standing tradition that many will miss, as the van has become more than just a food stop—it has been a symbol of local history and a source of cherished memories.

Golf, Prizes, and Dinner: Pearl City Elks Lodge Tournament Returns

The Pearl City Elks Lodge #2669 is hosting its 2nd Annual Golf Scramble Tournament, a fundraiser event packed with 18 holes of golf, prizes, and plenty of camaraderie. Set to take place on Friday, October 25 at the Leilehua Golf Course in Mililani, the tournament promises a day of friendly competition, drinks, and a delicious dinner back at the lodge.

The day kicks off with check-in at 8 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. shotgun tee time. For a $150 donation per golfer, participants will enjoy a full day of activities including beverages on the course, an 18-hole game, and a dinner at the Pearl City Elks Lodge after the tournament concludes.

Golfers can register individually through the event's dedicated Eventbrite page, where each player should include the names of their teammates for the event. Participants are encouraged to sign up early to ensure a spot in this fun-filled day of golf, prizes, and fellowship.

Leeward CC Event Inspires Next Generation of Educators Amid Hawaiʻi's Teacher Shortage

Leeward Community College’s Dive Into Education 2.0 event drew over 130 high school students from across Hawaiʻi to explore teaching career pathways. Through sessions focused on hands-on learning, cultural responsiveness, and classroom tools, students were inspired to consider education as a profession, particularly in response to the state’s teacher shortage. The event featured contributions from various University of Hawaiʻi campuses and included a keynote speech by Osa Tui Jr., president of the Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association.
