Pearl City Elementary School Organizes Hurricane Relief Donation Drive for Victims of Hurricane Helene
Pearl City Elementary School is leading a community-driven effort to support families affected by Hurricane Helene. The school has launched a donation drive aimed at providing essential items to those impacted in the Asheville and Black Mountain areas of North Carolina.
Donations will directly aid victims, helping them meet basic daily needs. All items collected by the Pearl City Elementary School (PCES) family will be shipped free of charge to the affected areas. The school is asking for contributions of clothing, toiletries, and other necessities to help those struggling after the disaster.
While food and water are not needed at this time, the school encourages donations of used or new clothing for men, women, and children, along with footwear, towels, hygiene products, baby supplies, first aid items, and school supplies. They are also collecting winter essentials like blankets and coats in preparation for colder weather.
The donation drive kicks off at the school's "Hot Dog Movie Night" on October 25, where attendees can drop off contributions at a designated Hurricane Helene donation box near the sign-in desk. Donations will also be accepted at the school office from October 25 through November 22.
In addition to material donations, the school invites the community to leave notes of encouragement for the hurricane victims. A special table will be set up during the movie night event for those who wish to write personal messages, which will be included in the shipment of donated goods.
Council Member Pushes Legislature to Tackle Spiraling Condo Insurance Rates
City Council member Val Okimoto's Resolution 242, urges state lawmakers to address the sharp increase in property insurance premiums on Oahu, especially affecting condo owners. The resolution highlights the toll of recent climate-related disasters, like the 2023 Maui wildfires, which have driven up insurance costs. Hawaii's limited condominium insurance options have forced associations to rely on expensive surplus lines, with premiums spiking as much as 1,000%. While Governor Green has taken steps to stabilize the market, Okimoto believes more legislative action is needed to prevent further financial strain on homeowners.
