Pearl City Residents Encouraged to Join "Give Big Hawai‘i" for Local Nonprofit Support
Aloha United Way, in partnership with Southwest Airlines, has launched the sixth annual "Give Big Hawai‘i" online fundraising platform. This initiative offers Pearl City residents and others across the state an easy way to contribute to their favorite local nonprofits through a centralized platform. The event runs for six weeks, allowing donors to contribute at their convenience.
Nonprofits interested in participating must sign up by November 15th, and registration is both free and straightforward. This year's platform enables donors to support local causes with ease. When you donate $25 or more to participating nonprofits, Southwest Airlines will reward you with 25 Rapid Rewards bonus points for every dollar donated, with a maximum of 10,000 points. Donations will be accepted through December 31, 2024.
Aloha United Way has been instrumental in supporting community needs through projects like the ALICE Initiative, which addresses financial instability in Hawai‘i. Their ongoing support continues to strengthen local communities through programs like Give Big Hawai‘i.
Trick-or-Treating Tips to Keep Keiki Safe This Halloween
With Halloween just around the corner, now is the perfect time to ensure a safe and enjoyable night for your keiki. Here’s a few important safety tips for families to follow in preparation for the holiday.
When selecting costumes for children, it is recommended to avoid dark colors and opt for makeup instead of masks, which can obstruct vision. Costumes should allow free movement and be made of fire-resistant materials, incorporating reflective fabric or tape to enhance visibility in the dark.
For those looking for alternatives to trick-or-treating, experts suggest hosting a Halloween party or attending a local community event. However, if you plan on trick-or-treating, it's best to stay within your own neighborhood, begin early, and stick to well-lit areas. Keiki should always follow pedestrian safety rules, such as using sidewalks and crossing streets at designated points like stoplights or crosswalks.
Children are also advised to avoid dark homes and strangers while trick-or-treating, and they should never enter a home without parental permission. The top safety priority is to remain alert and report any suspicious activity by contacting 911.
After the festivities, parents are encouraged to thoroughly inspect all Halloween candy before allowing their children to enjoy it. Any unsealed or non-original packaging should be discarded for safety.
Leeward Community College 34th Discovery Fair Brings More Fun and Food for All
Leeward Community College is expanding its annual family event, the Discovery Fair, for its 34th year, offering more activities and food than ever before. Set for Saturday, November 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event will take place at the Pu‘uloa Campus in Pearl City. The fair is known for hands-on educational experiences for children, with classic activities like Slime Time and Quicksand Goo returning, and exciting new offerings such as Beetle Battleship, voyaging and navigation, and even using gummi bears to make fuel.
In addition to science-themed fun, attendees can explore cultural activities, including traditional Hawaiian games like ‘ulu maika and kōnane, as well as crafting Filipino stars (parol) and Korean wooden pendants.
Food will be a major highlight this year, with a variety of local vendors offering a range of treats, including Happy Belly Eatery, Kona Ice, Krazy Dogs, and Leeward’s Culinary Arts Program serving up fresh meals at the Ala ‘Ike Grill. Entertainment will be provided by 102.7 Da Bomb, with DJ giveaways, Balloon Monsoon, and a magic show by Leeward alumnus Harvey Ouchi.
Best of all, the fair is free to attend, with no cost for parking or any of the educational activities.
