Pearl City Sets Record as Obuhanych Claims Hawaii Air Riflery Title

Pearl City Charger, Chloe Obuhanych, captured the Hawaii state girls' individual air riflery title on Tuesday with an impressive score of 640, overcoming last year’s narrow miss by just two points. Her performance included a final-round high score of 91 at the Blaisdell Arena, which saw a site change this year, allowing for better lighting and fewer distractions for competitors.

Obuhanych’s victory also led Pearl City Charger girls to their third consecutive team championship, setting a state tournament record of 2,181 points, which surpassed the previous high of 2,137 set by Punahou in 2016. Teammates Jenna Liang and Ella Wenceslao supported the team effort, securing three of the top four individual spots.

Aiea House Fire Quickly Controlled by Honolulu Fire Department

Yesterday afternoon, a large fire at a home on Hapaki Street in Aiea displaced two residents, prompting a swift response from the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD). The blaze, reported through a 911 call at 1:11 p.m., mobilized nine HFD units and 34 firefighters who arrived on scene within six minutes. Firefighters worked quickly to control the flames, bringing the fire under control by 1:33 p.m. and fully extinguishing it by 1:41 p.m.

Thankfully, no one was found inside during the search, and no injuries were reported. The American Red Cross is currently providing assistance to the two residents affected by the fire. HFD has begun an investigation into the cause of the blaze and is assessing the extent of the damages.

HPD Declares Keiki Pedestrian Safety Week for Halloween

In anticipation of Halloween festivities this Thursday, the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) and City officials have declared this week as "Keiki Pedestrian Safety Week." With October already recognized as Pedestrian Safety Month, the additional emphasis aims to protect young trick-or-treaters and all pedestrians. Officials are highlighting the importance of safe practices for children navigating neighborhoods after dark, reminding drivers and families to exercise caution and awareness during this popular evening event. The week will include safety campaigns, reminders for children to wear visible costumes, and calls for drivers to remain vigilant.

Staff Shortages and Budget Cuts Threaten Hawaii’s Library Operations

The Hawaii State Public Library System risks losing funding for 37 unfilled positions due to state budget plans, which could reduce hours and resources, especially in rural areas. Librarian Stacey Aldrich will request additional funding to maintain these roles and enhance security amid rising incidents. The system also faces challenges with aging infrastructure, with Aldrich seeking $28 million for overdue repairs. Extended hiring delays have worsened staffing issues, forcing some qualified candidates to seek jobs elsewhere. If cuts proceed, the impact could weaken library services statewide, limiting resources for Hawaii’s communities.
