Aloha Stadium Boosts Security After Bold Swap Meet Theft
Following a recent jewelry theft, Aloha Stadium has introduced increased security measures at its Swap Meet, including additional surveillance cameras, enhanced staff visibility, and theft-prevention training for vendors. Vendors have raised concerns over insufficient security and are urging more comprehensive measures. A theft-prevention training with the Honolulu Police Department was conducted on Oct. 30 to support vendors in handling suspicious activities. No arrests have been made related to the Oct. 19 incident.
Clocks Fall Back This Sunday as Daylight Saving Time Ends
Today marks the end of daylight saving time, meaning clocks should be set back one hour at 2 a.m., offering a chance for an extra hour of sleep. Daylight saving time, which begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November, was initially designed to make better use of daylight hours during warmer months and potentially reduce energy use.
Despite its original intent, the practice has become controversial. Over the years, lawmakers at both state and federal levels have advocated for making daylight saving time a permanent fixture. In 2022, the Senate even passed a bill to adopt year-round daylight saving time, but the proposal stalled in the House.
Health experts warn that the shift can disrupt sleep and daily routines, particularly affecting children, seniors, and early risers. These groups may experience mood fluctuations, fatigue, and a temporary rise in workplace accidents. To ease the adjustment, experts suggest gradually adjusting bedtimes and meal times by 15 to 30 minutes in the days leading up to the shift.
AARP Alerts Seniors to New AI-Powered Scams as Technology Advances
The AARP is warning seniors about the risks of AI-driven scams, including deepfake images and voice cloning, which can make impersonations extremely realistic. Reports show that phone scams by criminals posing as law enforcement are on the rise, using AI to mimic voices and create convincing fake personas. The AARP is offering online courses next month to educate seniors on recognizing these sophisticated scams.
