Speed Limits Reduced Near Oahu Parks, Schools to Curb Accidents
Honolulu city officials are urging residents to be mindful of their speed as a new measure aims to reduce traffic-related fatalities on Oahu. On Thursday, the Honolulu City Council approved Bill 44, which lowers speed limits near certain public parks and school areas across the island.
The new regulation sets a maximum speed limit of 20 miles per hour on roads that border public parks and school grounds, a reduction from the previous 25 mph limit. Additionally, speed limits within Ala Moana and Kailua Beach Parks, as well as select schools, will be further reduced to 15 miles per hour.
Introduced by Councilmembers Tyler Dos Santos-Tam and Esther Kiaʻaina, the bill targets pedestrian-heavy zones and high-risk areas to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike. The city’s Department of Transportation Services will oversee the implementation of the new speed limits, though the exact timeline for changing the signs remains unknown.
