Suspect in Aiea Hit-and-Run Also Faces Federal Fraud Allegations
Totie Nalani Tauala, a 50-year-old woman with a lengthy criminal history, is under investigation for a hit-and-run that left a retired firefighter seriously injured. Tauala is also facing federal charges for defrauding an elderly man, spending over $20,000 on luxury items using his stolen financial information. Currently in federal custody, she awaits trial for the fraud case while police continue investigating the hit-and-run.
Scammers Pose as Hawaiian Electric Employees, Targeting Customers
As the holiday season begins, Hawaiian Electric is urging customers to be vigilant against a surge in scams targeting residents. These scams often involve threats of power disconnection unless immediate payment is made.
Over the summer, scammers adopted increasingly sophisticated tactics, impersonating Hawaiian Electric employees and providing fake work order numbers. Victims were directed to call an 800 number, where they were told a field technician would contact them, escalating the urgency for payment.
Hawaiian Electric stresses that they do not contact customers with threats of disconnection for unpaid bills, nor do they request payment information through text or email. Customers are encouraged to stay alert and report any suspicious communications.
