October is bringing a fresh lineup of Pearl City events for residents looking to get involved, spend time outdoors or keep up with what is happening close to home.

From community service along the Pearl Harbor Bike Path to fall activities at the Urban Garden Center, the month offers several reasons to get out into the neighborhood.

Pearl Harbor Bike Path Cleanup

On Saturday, October 10, volunteers are expected to gather along portions of the Pearl Harbor Bike Path for a community cleanup.

Local groups are organizing volunteers to collect litter and help care for a route used by walkers, runners and cyclists throughout the Pearl City and Aiea area.

One volunteer group is scheduled to meet near Neal S. Blaisdell Park in the morning, while other participants will work along additional sections of the path.

It is a simple way for residents to spend part of a Saturday helping improve a heavily used public space.

Fall Harvest at the Urban Garden Center

One of the most distinctly local October events arrives Saturday, October 17, when the University of Hawaii Urban Garden Center hosts its Fall Harvest edition of Saturday at the Garden.

The event is scheduled from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the garden center on Kamehameha Highway in Pearl City.

Visitors can expect gardening activities, plant-related demonstrations, tropical fruit displays and opportunities to learn from local gardening experts.

Planned activities include pumpkin painting, orchard tours, lauhala weaving and information about topics such as cool-season vegetables, tree grafting and water-wise gardening.

For families and home gardeners, the event offers something different from the usual weekend outing.

General admission is free, although some individual activities may require registration or an additional fee.

Pearl City High School stays busy in October

October also brings several activities to Pearl City High School.

The Charger Marching Band is scheduled to appear at the Menehune Classic on October 17 and the Mililani Band Festival on October 24.

Halloween activities are scheduled for Friday, October 30, including a school assembly followed by a Halloween Drive-Thru beginning at 5 p.m.

Families connected to the school should check the current school calendar before attending in case schedules change.

Pearl City Neighborhood Board meets October 27

Residents interested in local government and neighborhood issues can also mark Tuesday, October 27 on the calendar.

The Pearl City Neighborhood Board is scheduled to hold its monthly meeting from 7 to 9 p.m.

The board typically meets at Momilani Community Center and provides a forum for community updates, government reports and concerns raised by Pearl City residents.

These meetings can be especially useful for residents who want to hear about local issues before they become bigger community conversations.

Residents planning to attend should confirm the latest agenda and meeting information beforehand.

More Pearl City events are coming

Community calendars tend to fill up as the month progresses, particularly as Halloween gets closer.

Pearl City Local will continue watching for school activities, community gatherings, nonprofit events and other happenings worth knowing about.

If your organization has a public event coming up in Pearl City, send the details to Pearl City Local for possible inclusion in a future community roundup.
