Rising Costs Impact Spay and Neuter Services in Pearl City

Pearl City residents are feeling the effects of rising costs, especially as spay and neuter services become more expensive — a trend impacting control efforts for Oahu’s feral animal population.

The Hawaiian Humane Society has raised fees at its Ginny Tiu Community Spay/Neuter Center; as of March 1, 2025, cat surgeries now cost $100, and dog procedures range from $150 to $200, depending on size.

Services include a pre-op exam, anesthesia, surgery, microchip, nail trim, and pain medication, with optional vaccines for $20 extra. Appointments, often booked months ahead, are required.

The Neuter Now program assists qualifying low-income households with $20 spay/neuter certificates, though high demand can lead to periodic suspensions.

For those caring for free-roaming cats, the Feline Fix program offers complimentary surgeries and microchips.

Despite these resources, increasing fees present ongoing hurdles for both families and animal rescues in Pearl City.

LDS Church Acquires Former Kam Drive-In Site for $60 Million

The dormant Kam Drive-In site in Aiea is set for change after its $60 million purchase by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Spanning 14 acres along Kamehameha Highway, the property’s recent sale brings new optimism to residents troubled by years of decline.

Neighbors have watched the former Kam Swap Meet site deteriorate into an eyesore plagued by crime and overgrowth.

Stephen Wood, chair of the Aiea Neighborhood Board, said the long-neglected lot has raised safety concerns across the community.

Earlier plans for a mixed-use development fell through amid the pandemic’s economic fallout, leaving the area stagnant and unsecure.

With the Church’s acquisition, leaders such as Councilmember Radiant Cordero hope for much-needed revitalization. Residents eagerly await future announcements that could return vibrancy and safety to this local landmark.

Electric Vehicle Drivers in Pearl City Face Changing Perks and Expanding Infrastructure

Electric vehicle drivers in Pearl City, Hawaii, are facing changes as major incentives wind down, while new infrastructure signals a continued push for clean energy.

For over a decade, solo EV drivers with designated plates could use Oahu’s HOV lanes, but this longstanding benefit will end on September 30, 2025, as federal authority over state HOV rules expires.

Federal tax credits up to $7,500 for new EV purchases or leases are also set to disappear, raising concerns about the impact on future buyers.

State leaders, including Representative Nicole Lowen, admit incentive cuts pose challenges but highlight that EV demand remains strong, driven by broader market trends and Hawaii’s clean energy mission.

Investment in new charging infrastructure is accelerating, with Electrify America opening its first Pearl City EV station and the state debuting 20 new chargers at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.

These initiatives aim to keep Hawaii moving toward 100% clean energy and net-zero emissions by 2045.

Honolulu City Council Advances Property Tax Relief Measures for Homeowners

The Honolulu City Council is advancing new property tax relief initiatives for homeowners, bringing potential benefits to residents in Pearl City and across the island.

Two major proposals, Bill 49 and Bill 50, would boost the real property tax exemptions and lessen the tax burden for qualified owners.

Bill 50 seeks to increase the base exemption from $120,000 to $140,000 for all eligible homeowners, while Bill 49 would raise it for seniors 65 and older to $180,000.

These adjustments could notably reduce taxable values, helping both working families and retirees—especially those on fixed incomes—manage rising property values in the years ahead.

Introduced by Council Chair Tommy Waters and Councilmember Val Okimoto, the measures are supported by community groups and analysts.

If approved, the changes are set to begin with the 2027 tax year.

Other Council discussions include exploring new tax financing programs to fund public projects and affordable housing on Oahu.

Hawaiian Council Launches Kalāhiki Initiative to Achieve Energy Independence

The Hawaiian Council has launched Kalāhiki, an ambitious program aimed at achieving energy sovereignty in Hawaiʻi as federal energy aid dwindles.

Josh Stanbro, appointed to lead Kalāhiki, is focused on supporting local families by making energy more affordable and homes secure.

Kalāhiki is driving efforts to replace imported fuels with locally produced power, advocating for solar panels on rooftops across the islands.

Recognizing that many residents can’t afford solar technology, the program is determined to assist those excluded from previous clean energy projects.

Stanbro underscores the importance of home protection and the urgent need created by climate change, referencing the recent Lahaina fires.

The council stepped up after $62.5 million in federal funding was cut, forming partnerships with local, often Native Hawaiian-run, businesses.

Kalāhiki positions itself as a trusted guide for families, protecting them from predatory companies and growing through careful, community-led pilot projects.

EPA's Termination of Solar Program Impacts Thousands in Pearl City, Oahu

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has abruptly ended the 'Solar for All' program, directly impacting many families in Pearl City, Oahu.

Designed to help low-income households access affordable solar power, this initiative recently awarded $62.45 million to the Hawaii Green Infrastructure Authority (HGIA) to boost clean energy statewide.

With the cancellation, local community solar projects are now stalled, leaving Pearl City residents who expected lower electricity bills in a state of uncertainty.

Community leaders and officials are urgently searching for new funding sources to keep renewable energy projects alive.

5 Essential Facts About the ʻŌhiʻa Lehua Tree

The ʻŌhiʻa Lehua tree (Metrosideros polymorpha) stands as a unique pillar of Hawaiʻi's forests, cherished for its deep cultural and ecological significance.

Steeped in Hawaiian tradition, the tree’s fiery blossoms grace hula adorning ceremonies and inspire legends that symbolize love and resilience.

Its wood has shaped ancient temples and tools, intertwining daily life with spiritual meaning.

Legends whisper that ʻŌhiʻa and Lehua, lovers separated by the goddess Pele, remain united through tree and flower— with rain falling whenever a Lehua blossom is plucked, marking their eternal bond.

Ecologically vital, ʻŌhiʻa Lehua covers the majority of native forests, protecting watersheds, enriching soil, and providing essential nectar for rare native birds like the ʻapapane and ʻiʻiwi.

Now, this resilient pioneer faces the severe threat of Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death, a fungal disease endangering both Hawaii’s biodiversity and its cultural legacy.

Fresh Local Milk Returns to Pearl City, Oahu

Pearl City residents now have access to fresh, local milk through a collaboration between Farm Link Hawaii and Meadow Gold Dairies.

This partnership is a key step in reviving Hawaii’s struggling dairy industry.

Once home to over 20 dairies, Hawaii’s local milk production dwindled in recent decades due to high costs, tough regulations, and competition from mainland imports.

Following the 2019 closure of Big Island Dairy, Cloverleaf Farm in Kohala became the only commercial dairy left, modernizing to meet local demand.

Now, Cloverleaf supplies milk to Meadow Gold for processing in Hilo, with Farm Link Hawaii delivering it straight to Oahu homes.

This 100% local milk, branded Island Fresh, carries the state’s official certification and supports local farmers.

Choosing local milk helps reduce imports, promote sustainability, and strengthen Hawaii’s agricultural future.

Japanese Walking: A New Approach to Fitness That May Outpace 10,000 Steps

The widely recognized goal of taking 10,000 steps daily for good health is being reconsidered as "Japanese walking" grows in popularity for its efficiency and benefits.

Developed by Shinshu University researchers, this method blends three minutes of brisk walking at about 70% maximum effort with three minutes of slower-paced walking.

This cycle, repeated for 30 minutes, four times a week, has shown measurable improvements in aerobic fitness, leg strength, and blood pressure—outperforming traditional continuous walking.

Unlike the 10,000-step target, which originated more from 1960s Tokyo Olympic marketing than from science, recent studies show that more focused walking routines can yield substantial health rewards with fewer steps.

For anyone seeking a time-saving and effective way to exercise, Japanese walking stands out as a compelling alternative to step counting.

New Aloha Stadium Plans Include Potential for Expanded Seating and Accelerated Opening Date

The transformation of Honolulu’s iconic Aloha Stadium continues to gather momentum, with leaders exploring ways to boost seating capacity and move up the grand opening.

Initially planned for 22,500 seats, Governor Josh Green underlined ambitions to eventually expand the venue to as many as 38,000 seats, calling the first phase just the beginning.

The state remains confident in developer Stanford Carr, citing mutual trust built over years.

Though previously targeted for the 2028 University of Hawaii football season, the stadium’s debut is now scheduled for March 2029, but Governor Green hopes for a faster timeline.

Additional private investments are being sought to accelerate construction and increase capacity, bolstering Hawaii’s Division I credentials.

Demolition of the old stadium is set to start this fall—potentially with fireworks—signaling new beginnings for local tourism, sports, and entertainment.

Chuck E. Cheese Pearl City Bids Aloha After Three Decades

After three decades of joy and celebrations, Chuck E. Cheese in Pearl City will close its doors on Sunday, August 10.

Since December 1994, families have gathered here for birthdays and milestones, making it a beloved local institution.

Franchise co-owner Jodie Hasche shared heartfelt appreciation for community support, recalling generations who made memories at the venue.

The closure stems from uncertain lease terms, with only two years guaranteed—making further investment unrealistic for the owners.

More than 170 items, including games and furniture, will be auctioned, with bidding set to conclude by Monday, August 11.

Despite this bittersweet farewell, Honolulu and Kapolei Chuck E. Cheese locations will remain open, ensuring family fun continues elsewhere.

Many, like former employee Kaimana Kauwalu, regard Pearl City as “home,” cherishing the memories made there.

The end of this era leaves a lasting legacy in Pearl City.
