Sumida Watercress Farm: A Century of Cultivation in Aiea |
Family-Owned Farm Continues to Thrive Amid Urbanization |
In the heart of Aiea, nestled between bustling highways and modern developments, lies Sumida Watercress Farm, a verdant oasis that has been cultivating watercress for nearly a century.
Established in 1928 by Makiyo and Moriichi Sumida, the farm has remained a family-run operation, now managed by the fourth generation, Emi and Kyle Suzuki.
The farm's success is largely attributed to the pure, fresh waters of Kalauao Springs that flow through its fields, providing an ideal environment for watercress cultivation.
Despite the encroaching urban landscape, Sumida Farm has managed to produce approximately 200 tons of watercress annually, supplying over 70% of Hawaii's demand for this nutrient-rich vegetable.
In 2022, the farm secured a 25-year lease renewal with Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate, ensuring its operations continue until at least 2045.
This agreement underscores the community's commitment to preserving local agriculture amidst rapid development.
Sumida Farm's dedication to sustainable practices and community engagement has not gone unnoticed.
In 2022, it received the SmallBiz Editor’s Choice Award in Agriculture from a prominent local business magazine, recognizing its significant contributions to Hawaii's agricultural landscape.
While the farm does not offer public tours, it continues to host educational field trips for local schools, fostering a connection between Hawaii's youth and their agricultural heritage.
For those interested in supporting Sumida Farm, their watercress is available at various local supermarkets and farmers' markets across the island.
As Sumida Watercress Farm approaches its centennial, it stands as a testament to the resilience and dedication of Hawaii's farming families, preserving tradition while adapting to the challenges of modern agriculture. |
