Rising Costs Impact Spay and Neuter Services in Pearl City

Residents of Pearl City are facing challenges as rising costs affect spay and neuter services, crucial for managing Oahu's feral pet populations.

 

The Hawaiian Humane Society has increased fees at its Ginny Tiu Community Spay/Neuter Center to offset operational expenses. As of March 1, 2025, the cost to spay or neuter a cat has risen to $100, while dog procedures now range from $150 to $200, depending on size. These fees include pre-operative examination, anesthesia, surgery, microchip, nail trim, and post-operative pain medication for dogs. Optional vaccinations are available for an additional $20. Appointments are required, and slots often fill up months in advance.

 

To support low-income residents, the Neuter Now program offers discounted spay/neuter services. Qualifying households can purchase certificates for $20 each, valid for one dog or cat. However, due to high demand, the program has faced suspensions in the past when funding was depleted. Residents are encouraged to check current availability and apply promptly.

 

For free-roaming cats, the Feline Fix program provides no-cost spay/neuter surgeries, including microchipping and ear notching. This initiative aims to humanely reduce the feral cat population over time. Caregivers can schedule appointments directly with participating clinics without purchasing a certificate.

 

Despite these programs, the rising costs pose challenges for both pet owners and rescue organizations. Community members are urged to take advantage of available resources and support local initiatives to manage and reduce the feral pet population in Pearl City.
