LOCAL BUSINESS

Family-owned Guieb Café has served homestyle breakfast and lunch in ʻAiea since October 2022, from local-style mix plates and waffles to prime rib served daily until it sells out.
98-025 Hekaha St., Bldg. 4, Unit 14, ʻAiea · Open daily 7 a.m.–3 p.m. · (808) 888-2121
Why locals like it: the whole menu is served all day, and last Thanksgiving the café gave out free meals to the community.

THEN

In October 1973, a federal photographer flew over Pearl City and shot new subdivisions spreading up the red-dirt hillsides. His caption called Pearl City "the fastest growing area in all of Hawaii" and noted the state Land Use Commission had just rezoned land next to an older neighborhood for urban use.

NOW

Those bare streets are today's settled neighborhoods. And the growth story started long before 1973: Pearl City was laid out in 1890 as Oʻahu's first planned community, right after the Oahu Railway & Land Co. line opened in 1889.

Trivia Question❓

In October 1973, a federal photographer flew over Pearl City for a nationwide project documenting America's environment and growth. Which federal agency ran that project, and what was it called?
